Sharing its title with Nelson Mandela’s autobiography, this is fact-based storytelling on an epic scale, Idris Elba (THOR) starring as Mandela with magnificent authority. Mandela’s sense of injustice found its voice when he was a young lawyer taking part in non-violent protest, but his activism of course led to 27 years of imprisonment for sedition against the apartheid regime. His politicisation was partly driven by his wife, Winnie (Harris, SKYFALL), and director Justin Chadwick spotlights that relationship while not shying away from the controversies that it generated. In fact the human frailties at play only serve to emphasise Mandela’s impressive transition to statesmanship and to an icon for democracy in a troubled country and around the world.
