Run time: 106 mins

Gil Kenan’s delightful fantasy fable is a joyeux to behold, and with many Christmas films of recent years feeling cheap and tacky, this is a breath of crisp, winter air.

The film centers on the origin story of Father Christmas, with eleven-year-old Nikolas (Henry Lawfull) making pals with a pet mouse and a resourceful reindeer to begin an extraordinary adventure to find his father (Michiel Huisman), a fabled village in the North Pole, and forge his own destiny.

The star-studded film – including Maggie Smith, Jim Broadbent, and Sally Hawkins – is adapted from the bestselling 2015 book by Matt Haig. It brings all sorts of wintry wonders to life as Nikolas bravely takes on a quest to find the rumoured realm of Elfhelm. His journey is far from easy, though, as little Nik grapples with the harsh elements of the Far North, as well as the darkness of the world and his own losses.

If you feel like you’ve seen The Polar Express and Arthur Christmas one too many times, then this is the perfect alternative gift. (Jack Whiting)
