Kick-Ass and Kingsmen director Matthew Vaughn injects his trademark blend of humour, flair and hyper-stylised action into this raucous spy thriller.
Renowned author Elly (Bryce Dallas Howard) captivates a dedicated fanbase with her spy novels featuring the charismatic agent Argylle (Henry Cavill) and his sidekicks (John Cena, Ariana DeBose). Elly’s visit to her overly involved mother (O’Hara) intertwines her path with Aidan (Sam Rockwell), a genuine and scrappy spy, revealing that her literary creations have made her an espionage target. Together, they embark on a high-stakes journey to thwart the malevolent agency boss (Cranston), threatening their lives.
Howard is a smart choice as a likeable and intelligent lead, navigating the escalating chaos. Her dynamic chemistry with Rockwell carries things along nicely, while the comedic powerhouses Cranston and O’Hara lift the laughs to another level. DeBose and Cena, though slightly underused, contribute to the ensemble and Jackson brings his trademark laid-back cool to the show, rounding out the extremely likeable cast.
Visually striking and packed with punches, it’s everything we’ve come to know from Vaughn and his spirited spin on the secret agent formula. Great fun
