Nicole Kidman stars in Halina Reijn’s stylish and provocative drama.
Kidman plays Romy, a high-powered robotics executive juggling a passionate home life with her theatre-director husband Jacob (Antonio Banderas) and their two teenage daughters. When Romy hires a charismatic young intern, Samuel (Harris Dickinson), his playful confidence awakens an obsession that upends her carefully controlled life. As their increasingly intense encounters escalate, Romy struggles to define their relationship, revelling in how Samuel strips away her authority while forcing her to confront buried desires.
Delving into sexuality with unflinching honesty, with a script that refuses to shy away from uncomfortable truths, it’s a deeply human story about the messy, contradictory nature of desire. Reijn’s direction vividly immerses us in Romy’s perspective, exposing her raw impulses and vulnerabilities. Kidman delivers a fearless performance, making Romy complex, powerful, and fragile, while Dickinson charges Samuel with a dangerous charm, never crossing into villainy but understanding his hold over her. Banderas adds additional depth with a standout scene that crackles with tension.
A bold, unsettling, and utterly compelling take on desire, self-perception, what we want, and what we fear admitting to ourselves
