An all-star cast head up Oscar-winner Chloe Zhao’s entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
7,000 years ago, 10 immortal super-beings were sent to Earth as guardians against a race of monsters known as Deviants, which were finally defeated 500 years ago. However, when Sersi is attacked in present-day London, she and her companions Ikaris and Sprite head off in search of their leader. Their scattered team reunited, the Eternals soon discover the truth behind their ancient mission on Earth and become divided about how to take action against an imminent global catastrophe.
With the MCU continuing to branch into post-Endgame territory, it’s great to see such an explosive franchise try something more character-driven. Angelina Jolie might be front and centre on the posters but it’s Gemma Chan and Richard Madden that add the real spark as a pair of star-crossed lovers.
The easing of restrictions over the last year or so has seen a slew of delayed blockbusters vying for our attention. Eternals is Marvel’s third major release this year and with Spiderman about to swing back into theatres worldwide, they’re showing no signs of slamming on the brakes. Keep em coming. (Chris Coetsee)
