This was the first Bond to really hit home. It was the third, so had to become iconic or lose its grip on that part of the vital mid-sixties. With Sean just coming into his own and making Bond unmistakably his own, it hit iconic with such force, nothing would stop it (until Daniel C turned it into po-faced pc Mission Impossible stuff). Thanks to Sean it is still running. Goldfinger created a hit song that even now, 59 years later, won’t lie down and die. Oddjob is immortalised with his lethal, frisbee bowler, Gert Frobe had only to deliver the best line properly: “No Mr Bond, I expect you die” to steal the film. Shirley Eaton died naked in gold and the gorgeous Honor Blackman will be forever ‘Poosy’. A finest hour all round. Now we have a brand new print to show on our big screen without a crackle or blemish. Come now. Next time, after it’s done the rounds, it might be full of bullet holes. So let’s raise a scotch to big-man Sean – that rare mega star who seemed never to be shaken or stirred. Come.
