Sony continues to expand their PlayStation brand into live-action projects – we’ve had Uncharted and The Last of Us so far – with this thrilling adaptation of their flagship racing simulator.
Gran Turismo is inspired by the real-life experiences of British teenager Jann Mardenborough (played here by Archie Madekwe), whose PlayStation proficiency won him the chance to compete as a real-life racing driver in GT Academy, a Nissan-sponsored promotion intended to get the public loving cars again.
Smarmy motor-sport wheeler-dealer Danny Moore (Orlando Bloom) sets this all up for Jann. Moore’s idea, which he pitches to Nissan, is to sell “the dream of the open road” to a generation of couch potatoes, turning “sim racers” into real-life petrolheads. Jack Salter (David Harbour) is the gruff trainer who reluctantly becomes Jann’s mentor after realising that they are both outsiders.
What follows is a pretty formulaic, against-all-odds underdog story as Jann works his way up the ranks in thrillingly realised races. There are some nifty effects as Jann is seen gaming in his bedroom; graphics conjure a virtual vehicle around him, turning his home into a racetrack. Buckle up.
