Who’d have thought it? The origin story for criminal mastermind Gru and his yellow helpers is by far the series’s punchiest entry yet

The year is 1976. Gru (Steve Carell), the franchise’s ambiguously European-accented villain, is 12 years old. And his dreams are on the verge of coming true, after he lands an audition to join the malevolent supergroup known as the Vicious Six after their founding member Wild Knuckles (Alan Arkin) is unceremoniously given the boot and left to plummet to his death. WHen Gru’s application is denied on the basis that he’s just a child, he decides to prove himself by stealing an all-powerful magic stone that’s at the centre of the group’s villainous plans.

There are a number of terrific throwaway jokes, not least in the names of members of the Vicious Six: a Swedish Viking called Svengeance; Nun Chuck is a spooky nun who splits her crucifix into weapons; and Jean-Claude Van Damme voices a lobster-limbed baddie called Jean Clawed.

The film’s approach is a near-relentless barrage of sight gags, puns and effervescent cartoon violence; the result is exhausting but extremely funny.
