When an artificial intelligence known as the Entity goes rogue, Ethan is sent to stop it before it digitally destroys our reality. In the Arabian desert, he searches for old flame Ilsa, who has obtained half of the AI’s access key. Assisted by his gifted allies Luther and Benji, Ethan also teams up with ace thief Grace. Their adventure takes them across the globe, pursued by ghostly adversary Gabriel, deadly assassin Paris and arms dealer White Widow as they all scramble to gain control of the Entity before it’s too late.
Churning with tension from the opening shot, everything is centred around epic action set-pieces that are staged to perfection, flinging characters through a wonderfully messy car chase in Rome, hand-to-hand combat in Venice’s claustrophobic alleys and an extended sequence on a train which may just be the greatest in the franchise. Cruise once again puts his life on the line, (literally) diving headfirst into the stuntwork to create a series of incredible, heart-stopping moments.
It may be the beginning of the end for Hunt, but he’s going out in exhilarating style. Mission accomplished.
