Run time: 96 mins

Nina Hoss delivers a knockout performance in this bracing German-language drama.

Lisa was once a famous playwright but her creative spark has gone out and she now lives in Switzerland with her husband and their two children. Sven (Lars Eidinger), her twin, is a celebrated theatre actor but has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukaemia. Deciding to return to Berlin and help with her brother’s recovery, Lisa finds herself in a position which threatens to tear her own life to pieces.

Co-directors Stéphanie Chuat and Véronique Reymond focus on the connection between the two siblings, winding that into the wider theme of living your dreams. The film’s a true showcase for Hoss, who gradually brings her character to a pitch of fury and despair. The prospect of losing the brother who’s two minutes older than her sees Lisa undergo a psychic upheaval no one around her can truly comprehend. Together with Eidinger, the pair are superb, running through a whole host of emotions at the drop of a hat.

A contender earlier this year for the international feature film Oscar, it’s a frank, poignant and first-rate piece of filmmaking. (Chris Coetsee)
