Gothic unicorns. A Skittles advert. A magical pen named Steve. These are just some of the many weird and wonderful things in this superhero spectacle.
Billy Batson (Asher Angel) is the teen kid in Philadelphia living with foster parents and foster siblings, who with the cry of “Shazam!” has the ability to transform himself into the clean-cut superhero (Zachary Levi) whose impostor syndrome worries are not helped by the fact that he often makes an awful mess of crime-fighting.
The villains of the day are Daughters of Atlas, played by Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler. For reasons involving wizards, magical spheres and a golden apple – don’t dwell on the extremely convoluted specifics any more than that – they want to steal back the powers of Shazam, so as to restore their own realm.
This new Shazam film is cordial, with a goofy good nature and an awareness of its own silliness; it has a just-out-of-the-fridge orange juice taste that makes it sweet and likeable. And who doesn’t want to see Helen Mirren as an all-powerful Greek goddess?
