Run time: 117 mins

Kristen Stewart embodies Diana, Princess of Wales, with pitch-perfect fragility in this heart-wrenching biographical drama by Pablo Larraín.

Collared by pearls identical to those bought by Prince Charles (Jack Farthing) for his then-mistress, Camilla, Diana (Kristen Stewart) spends Christmas at the Queen’s estate attempting to evade the oppression of her in-laws. Suffering with an eating disorder and intense isolation, she begins to fantasise about rebelling from the glares, passive-aggressive remarks and sewn-closed curtains with increasing furore.

Though largely fictional in nature – the film opens entitled as ‘a fable from a true tragedy’ – Spencer captures the emotional landscape of Diana’s plight with searing clarity through screenwriter Steven Knight and Jackie director Pablo Larraín’s crafting. With the cinematographer of Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Claire Mathon, the costume designer of Atonement, Jacqueline Durran, and the production designer of Inception, Guy Hendrix Dyas, in the crew, it’s no wonder that it’s such a consistently rich visual banquet.

The most unforgettable aspect, though, is Kristen Stewart’s emergence from the sordid ash of the Twilight franchise in phoenix form, with her offering of a nuanced, mature, and most importantly accent-secure performance that is truly captivating.
