Magnus Von Horn’s character study of the glamour and grimness of a fitness influencer’s lifestyles forms a stark, if not niche, warning against virtual fame.
Sylwia (Magdalena Kolesnik) has amassed a 600,000-person strong following of her fitness account. Young, beautiful and passionate, her life appears hyper-real as a utopia of lucrative sponsorship deals, hunky assistant Klaudiusz (Julian Swiezewski) and sprawling apartment. Behind closed doors, Sylwia struggles. She finds herself isolated, objectified and stalked with her online persona and offline personality morphing and warping in disorientating waves. When she exposes her emotional vulnerability in a video which is perceived by her followers as relatable but as erratic by her sponsors the clash between her personal crises and professional commitments develops to an emotive climax.
Risking being fundamentally tone deaf due to the immensely privileged status of its protagonist, Von Horn achieves a surprisingly astute criticism of the artifice of the online world. Supported by a tense score by Piotr Kurek, swift editing by Agnieszka Glinska and crisp production design by Jagna Dobesz, it’s a succinct consideration of the benefits and pitfalls of commodified narcissism.
