Run time: 110 mins

In what feels like an eternity since Grand Budapest Hotel, Wes Anderson returns to the live-action fold with another, well, Wes Anderson film.

The French Dispatch is an amiable meander through an anthology of stories, connected to the newspaper of the film’s title. Arthur Howitzer Jr. (Bill Murray) is the paper’s editor, with a “no crying” rule in his office and a fiercely protective attitude to his writers, including Sazerac (Owen Wilson), Berensen (Tilda Swinton), Roebuck Wright (Jeffrey Wright) and Krementz (Frances McDormand). The movie unfolds as a series of stories written by the journalists, from a tale of student protests in 1968 fronted by devilish teenager Zeffirelli (Timothée Chalamet) who wears his heart on his skinny sleeves and writes innocently bad manifestos about the revolution that require brutal editing. To the story of prison artist Rosenthaler (Benicio del Toro) being groomed for painterly success, with Léa Seydoux as his warden.

There’s real feeling behind the whimsical sophistication; this is the Wes we know and love. Like any print classic, it begs to be leafed over again and again so that new details emerge. (Jack Whiting)
