A culinary experience like no other in Mark Mylod’s deliciously vicious black comedy-horror.

Heading to the exclusive island restaurant Hawthorn, Tyler is excitedly eager to worship the concoctions of top chef Slowik, while his last-minute date Margot finds the whole thing rather ridiculous. Their fellow diners are the uber-privileged, from a fading movie star (Leguizamo) and celebrity food critic to a celebrity power couple and trio of arrogant business-bros. Following a brief tour, the group’s ominous host Elsa leads them to their tables and as a lavish procession of food begins, each course becomes more deadly than the last.

The super-rich aren’t exactly a difficult target for satire, nor is the rarified atmosphere of Michelin-starred cuisine. Parodying the pretensions of elite dining with sharp social commentary, Mylod stirs skilfully subtle highlights into each scene that are witty and knowing in the cruelest ways possible. The cherry in top is a first-rate cast including Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult, who make this concoction of awful people delightfully entertaining. Realistically no one deserves the fates that await them here, but there’s a bleak, secret satisfaction watching it play out.
