Run time: 95 mins

A coming-of-age tale with an unerring eye for detail, this seemingly familiar drama set in rural Ireland in 1981 is also quietly subversive.

There’s a heartfelt simplicity to the film’s story, a rumination on grief’s longevity and pain through the eyes of a child. We follow Cáit (Catherine Clinch), a young girl in a cramped family home in rural Ireland filled with siblings and managed by the indifferent affection offered by her mother and father.

As the family await the birth of their fifth child, she’s sent to live with two older relatives she’s never met in Eibhlín and Seán for the summer. In this new spacious home on their farm, she forms a close bond with the older couple as she experiences the love and affection she was never provided at home.

This compassionate debut film from Colm Bairéad is a child’s-eye look at our fallen world. In another, perhaps lazier kind of film, all this stillness and rural beauty would be a sign of something horrible to come. But The Quiet Girl is doing something gentler than this, as well as realer and truer. It is a gem not to be missed.
