Angelina Jolie faces the flames in this scorching action thriller.
Hannah is a smokejumper, haunted by a disaster that claimed the lives of three teenagers, which she blames herself for. When Hannah crosses paths with a young boy named Connor, she learns his father was killed after gathering incriminating evidence against a mine boss. Together, Hannah and Connor race to stay one step ahead of a pair of assassins (Aiden Gillen and Nicholas Hoult) and the elements themselves, including a massive storm and a raging forest fire.
Jolie has played spies, assassins, sharks, an evil queen and a tomb raider among others. Here she gives her all to the role of a heroic firefighter, traumatized by a job gone wrong. Jolie is the perfect antithesis to a Clint Eastwood, who is exactly the kind of director this neo-western was crying out for. Elsewhere Hoult and Gillen skilfully give their murderous characters some cool-as-ice attitude but it’s Finn Little as Connor who effortlessly acts everyone else off the screen. He’s the one to care about in this sea of tough-talking badasses. (Chris Coetsee)
