Pedro Almodóvar’s vibrant and deeply human drama about family, memory and the complicated bonds between mothers and daughters returns for its 20th anniversary.

Raimunda (Penélope Cruz) is a fiercely determined woman keeping her family together while dreaming of building a life on her own terms. With her elderly aunt nearing the end of her life and her troubled husband creating further strain at home, Raimunda focuses on protecting her teenage daughter Paula (Yohana Cobo). Meanwhile, her sister Sole (Lola Dueñas) encounters the ghost of their late mother (Carmen Maura), whose return begins to uncover long-buried secrets and unresolved wounds from the past.

Almodóvar blends melodrama, humour and mystery with remarkable ease, creating a story that feels warm and familiar while gradually revealing darker emotional layers. Beneath the colourful settings and everyday conversations lies a thoughtful exploration of grief, forgiveness and the ways families carry their histories. Cruz gives one of her finest performances, bringing strength, vulnerability and complexity to Raimunda, while the entire ensemble captures the film’s mix of affection and pain.

Two decades on, its celebration of female characters, emotional honesty and distinctive visual style continuing to inspire filmmakers. A modern classic that still feels full of life
