Jane Schoenbrun crafts a intoxicating display of transformative ecstasy and submissive rapture, treating us to a bizarre pop-cultural world of fiercely believed-in trash and kink.
The director of I Saw the TV Glow gifts us another queer masterpiece (this one being far more accessible, so don’t panic) which follows smart young filmmaker Kris (Hannah Einbinder) who has been hired to “crack” the reboot of Camp Miasma – an endless, schlocky horror franchise which is itself a knock-off of Friday the 13th. In order to do so, she has tracked down the reclusive star of the original movie, Billy Presley (Gillian Anderson), with the hope of talking her into a cameo role. She discovers that Billy actually lives in the disused camp that was the location for the first film.
Billy is, at first, amused at Kris’s earnest description of her queer polyamory; there’s a deliciously awkward chemistry between the two leads, which marries perfectly with the deliberate artifice of the world around them. But boundaries come crashing down when the original killer becomes all too real. Gorgeous and exquisite, this slasher-cum-love story is essential viewing.
