Olivia Colman is in a class of her own in this gloriously oddball medieval fable about love, individuality and the joys of being different.

On the outskirts of a seaside village, a lonely, much-ridiculed Fisherwoman decides she has had enough of her narrow-minded neighbours. Her solution? Commissioning a husband made entirely from wicker (Alexander Skarsgård). But in this conservative community, their unconventional romance soon sparks outrage, jealousy and chaos.

Visually this is a treat, with every frame bursting with the imaginative detail of a medieval Edward Scissorhands. Its bawdy humour and raunchy, off-kilter script give the familiar folk-tale setting a wonderfully distinctive flavour. Colman throws herself into the role with gleeful abandon, delivering a wonderfully unrestrained performance that gradually reveals a more tender side. Skarsgård makes an equally intriguing partner.

Beneath the mischief lies a big-hearted belief that love can challenge convention and change minds. And while it draws on recognisable fairy-tale archetypes, the film embraces them wholeheartedly. Strange, funny and unexpectedly sweet, Wicker makes a compelling case for celebrating the things that set us apart.
